Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I begin?

For those who are looking for an introduction to social justice, we recommend the community social justice course. Click here.

How do I learn how to talk to my family about racism?

One of the responses we get from participants about our social justice training is that they feel they learn the language to address their family and friends about racism and other systems of oppression, and they gain more confidence in their ability to do so. We recommend the 6-week community social justice course for you! Click here.

I’m a teacher – where do I look for classroom resources?

Great! We have been working with educators for years, and our Educator Core Course is for you! Educators who’ve taken our course find that it helps them to courageously interrogate their curriculum & pedagogy, policies & procedures, images & celebrations, and school relationships in order to provide a more just environment for all students. Our educator series provides you with the EJATT (Education Justice Assessment and Transformation Tool), a detailed  guide to help you improve every area of your practice. Click here.

My organization’s staff and board of directors are all white – how do we diversify our operations?

We’re so glad you understand that diversity work begins with examining who holds power and who the decision makers are in an organization. We recommend contracting with JLC for our White People Working for Racial Justice offered either during working hours or evenings, as best accommodates your organization and the number of staff and board members who will be participating. Click here.

Can you provide consulting for me and my organization?

Yes! We offer coaching and consulting either in a package with coursework for your organization or as a stand-alone. Click here.

I’m trying to gain confidence interrupting racism – where do I learn the skills for this?

Great! We recommend our Interrupting Bias workshop, a one-day skill development and practice session. Prerequisite: community social justice course. Click here.

I’m a white person trying to understand #BlackLivesMatter better – what course should I take?

Great! Our racial affinity anti-racist white caucus work is for you! We recommend White People Working for Racial Justice. It was designed for white people interested in taking a deeper dive into the history of racism and resistance to racism in the U.S. In this course, we examine white racial identity, the meaning of “allyship,” and tools for working effectively for racial justice. and We ask participants to do the deep inner work and self-reflection that leads to transforming ideas into action. This work is always done in parallel with intergroup work; we emphasize accountability with People of Color. Click here.

What is privilege?

“Privilege” refers to unearned advantages that certain groups in our society have based solely upon the fact that they belong to that group. If you are a part of a “privileged” group it means that you have access, opportunity, and power that is denied to other groups. For more, read An Introduction to Privilege by our co-founder Shayla R. Griffin, Ph.D.
